This is the kind of activity I had hoped to avoid. As the site grows, I'm afriad that it will only continue, especially if this sort of "bragging" takes place on the message board. To be honest, the only milestones worth claiming are the first bill entered (me) and the first hit (T.rev). After that, if you think about it, every other milestone will eventually be passed as there will always be some other milestone ahead.

In fact, I think I will start adding a randomness factor to the front page so that you can't tell "for sure" who entered what bill. That way, only the magic server will know for sure who entered what bill. :)

That would definitly take the fun out of it for me and others who look forward to these little accomplishments. It's the milestones that keep me going. If I lose that, there's really no reason for me to be here…

Wanted or not, as a webhost actively participaing on the website and in (your) forums, you have the same role as talkshow host and must moderate yourself as someone in a public role. We live in a democracy and get upset when a talkshow host says in not so few words, "You don't agree with my opinion goodbye.." click.

We know you own this website and can pull the plug on any of us at anytime, but we'd like to feel it is a democracy, so when you say its my website, and only me and my bro count, well… :(

Please let us have our small victories or it won't be fun anymore and we'll take our bills and go home.

I hope that wasn't harsh, it wasn't meant to be, its just you popped our ballon, threw a wet blanket on us…

T-rev

I don't about y'all, but I use the site cause it is fun to enter bills and wait until I get hits, the other stuff is a bonus. Sure it is fun to be competitive but come on there are lots of other things, we still have personal milestones, and competition against other users as far as bills, hits, percentage, and competition other teams, and cities, and provinces and I could go on. So my advice is enjoy what we have.

dr

My point was not that only my brother and I count, but that bragging about entering the 10,000th bill is like bragging about being the 100th person to climb Everest. No one remembers the 100th person to climb Everest, they only ever remember the first. That was my point in the previous message. For everyone else, it's simply the feat itself. You should be proud that you made it to the top, not that you were the hundredth person to do so. Because there are alway going to be people to come after you.

Bragging about milestones is not the reason for this site. The site is about tracking money, not being the person who entered the 45,00th bill (for example). There are a couple of problems that arise if it becomes a "big deal" to get a milestone. The first is that people just sit around and refresh the main page, waiting for a milestone to get close so they can enter the milestone bill. The second problem is that milestones temp people to perhaps enter fake bills so that they can get the milestone bill. Will this happen here? Perhaps not. But it has happened to other sites; any of you who are familiar with Slashdot will know what I'm talking about. When the site was small, the comments were thoughtful and insightful. Then the site got popular and it became "the thing to do" to post the FIRST message on a new subject. So, then the site was full of messages that simply read "First post!!!" or something along that lines. And in fact, people would just sit around waiting for a new topic to be posted and would then post their stupid "milestone" post. As a result the site admin had to change the way the site worked so that postings could be rated and such. Anyway, the point is that I don't want that to happen. Yes, it's not just my site anymore, it's OUR site; that is, everyone who participates here owns a piece of the site per se. And you do drive the features that I build and how things work around here. But, as with everything, there must be a few people (in this case me) who bring order to the chaos (if there is any). Right now, there isn't too much chaos, and I want it to stay that way.

How do I respond to the comment about no point in being here if you can't get milestones? As much as I appreciate that you may have entered in a lot of bills and it would be a shame to see you go, I'm not going to beg you to stay. I cannot emphasize enough that the point of this site is to track money and participate in the community, not to see who can enter the most bills or enter the bill that brings the total entered to $1,000,000 or anything like that. I've added the top ten stuff in there as, for the most part, it is harmless fun and encourages people to enter more bills and get more hits. If milestones are removed, there are still tonnes of cool things to do to keep you interested. Besides the top tens, there are all sorts of personal milestones you can try for (ie. getting your first hit, entering in 100 bills, getting hits in every province, etc…)

As a side note, the "other" site has a bill total that updates every XX number of minutes to prevent this very problem.

I didn't mean for this post to go into a mad rage of everyone argueing. All i was saying is the fact that Hoggs entered the 20000th bill… Someone asked, so i figured it out. Maybe i shouldnt even have opened my mouth. If Hoggs would have known, he probably added his own comment saying:
"Whoo hoo, i entered the 20000 bill. Im glad to have seen the site grow so big"
Something simple. So all it was was 20000, its not as if every time someone enters a bill ill say:
#23456 entered by MmmBeer
#24370 entered by saucy-eye
ETC
It was just something big like that, it caught someones eye to post it here, and its gone into a huge fight or something along the lines. I just say forget about this, im sorry i ever gave a damb as to say that Hoggs entered it, i wont do it again.

Well said. I don't have any "hits" after 2 months. I don't get a push from it (perhaps because I haven't had a first hit). Different things for different people as you point out. A site like this that has a tentative common thread will have to offer other things as well. This is what I find. The concept of relatively interactive communication between a population that clearly involves different sexes, and wide-ranging ages, and therefore interests, is what I find intoxicating. A window into the evolving dynamics that define what it is to be human. Imagine, from the sardonic wit of Pooga to the absolute manic energy of mmMBeer, to someone who is familiar with GPS and army lingo, to comforting recommendations of how to cook mushroom soup. I could go on. A rapid technological means to correct miscommunications and hurt feelings; a place for accolades and complaints that can be easily expressed: kind of like how families and friendships should run. Truly amazing. Well done to you dr. ( PS. did I understand that Calamity Janet has published?)

Serotonin

mmMBeer: I didn't catch the offensive interchange. Your gift (as I have found on CdnPaperSite is a gift for detail and that means a fascination for statistics. I take it for that. Nothing wrong with competition. A site like this can help us remind ourselves what really is important in the overall scheme. Life is pretty short. (the winters go faster and come more quickly as you get older).

Pooga

Well, there are those who will say that you might be half right S.

re: dr & milestones

I agree with most of what you say, but I feel that certain numbers are important milestones FOR THE SITE, not necessarily the individual. They are a measure of our progress and growth as a monetary community. We may not need to know WHO entered the bill that gets us to $500,000, but it is exhilarating to know that WE reached that point. To use your Mt. Everest analolgy, nobody may remember who reached the top of the mountain 100th (except of course for the person that did it), but we all KNOW with certainty that it was conquered 100 times, not 'maybe 99' or 'maybe 101'.

We have a fascination with certain numbers, especially those ending in zero. 50,000 bills, $500,000, these all have a certain appeal in their balance. Need I remind you of the hoopla over the year 2000, Canada's 100th (in '67), when the country reached a population of 20,000,000, or the world 6 billion. It was the event, not the individual that was celebrated (or mourned!).

When approached sensibly, the numbers are important to give us a sense of community. Let's not ignore them completely.

Sarge

I think certain community milestones are important, and we have reached a size and growth rate where it is inevitable that there will be a 40,000 bill, a half-million dollar milestone crossed etc. I think that's great. But I don't think it is so important anymore as to who put in the actual bill. It is a team effort…meaning all users - not the regional teams…as to accomplishing these milestones.

But it does get to the point where 20000, 30000, 40000 are meaningless in such huge numbers. I recall a saying along the lines of "a single death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic".

Using the Everest analogy, who even remembers, without looking it up, who the third person was to walk on the moon? or the last person? and we're talking a small group of 12 people total!

Perhaps we should take our milestones beyond the site… such as ".1% of the nations bills have been entered". Or as I've informed DR on private e-mail, as of 18th Jan, we passed the 50% mark of the "Dark Site's" total dollar value, and should pass 50% in total bills within another week. I started keeping records in early November when we were at 30% of them. At our current rate, we should pass them completely in both catagories in about three months. Now that WILL be a milestone to celebrate!

Idjit

Question: Who was the 100th guy to climb Mount Everest? What does it matter, except for the guy who did it. Entering the 30,000th bill may not mean anything to anyone but the guy who did it, but he/she has the right to be proud of it. Being the guy with the best CMT score might not mean anything to anyone except the guy who has it, but he should be damn proud of it. I'm the guy with the most bills entered right now, and I'm proud of it. You might not give a damn about what I think is important, but you really should allow us to talk about it…
I've argued this point in the past, and I'm sorry if it has caused problems for anyone. I will not comment again on this issue.

Serotonin

Sarge:To someone not overly big on numbers, that kind of crunching would meet my interests at this point.
Imagine life before the Arabs; there was no concept of zero. Hard to imagine how life could work without the zero by the comments flying on this site the past two days.

dr

You might not give a damn about what I think is important, but you really should allow us to talk about it…

I don't think you get my point. You can be proud of your accomplishments all you want. And I do care what the community thinks. But the problem with talking about certain things (especially milestones), is that some people get childish and will go out of their way to "grab" milestones; perhaps by camping on the site waiting to get a milestone or perhaps by entering in fake bills or who knows? And really, and this is where we disagree, having entered the 30,000th bill is nothing really to be proud of. What's the difference between the 30,000th and bill number 29,999? Nothing. And the other reason that it's silly is because everyone else here also entered bills that allowed some user to enter the 30,000th bill. It was a team effort. Be proud when you've entered 10,000 bills all by yourself; I know I was pretty happy when I reached the 1000 bills entered mark. But saying "I rule!" because you entered a single bill that seems like something special is like creating a human pyramid and the person at the very top thinking he/she's better than the some person at the bottom; it's a team effort. That is why I would remove the totals on the front screen.

The goal of this site has always been to track bills. Initially I wanted to get hits myself so I could see where my bills had been. Then as other people received hits, I found that it was almost as much fun to watch the hits of other people. So for maximum fun, we want maximum participation which ultimately means that the goal is to reach critical mass. Unfortunately, as the popularity of the site increases, so does the potential for problems of abuse, and we have to realize that we will have to adapt, as with life in general.
-dr

MmmBeer

Please dont erase the totals. Are you going to still have them in stats. I enjoy reading them and seeing us progress.. I check to see every day How many bills and dollars we all have gained together. Maybe i shouldnt have told people who entered the bill.

dr

Maybe i shouldnt have told people who entered the bill.

It's not that; it was actually your brother who started this with his "bragging" post, which is exactly the kind of thing I was talking about. I am not laying blame or anything, and while I don't think this core group of users we have right now will cause problems, it's the future users as this site grows that much larger that concern me.

I never said I would get rid of it, but instead just "skew" the totals a bit, so you never know exactly what bill you just entered (ie. it would be a small percentage plus or minus of the actual total).
-dr

qxghscx

I agree with you dr. In the future it could and probably be a problem. so "skew" away. I don't need to know who reached this milestone or that. I don't come here for that. I come here to track, and to find out where my money goes after I spend it. Keep up the good work.
