dr: you might be interested in this…
Going to work last night, I was listening to the news. There was a story that some businesses, mostly in the Calgary area, were using loonies and toonies as advertising, and that 'police are investigating'. Then the announcer stated that 'using currency for any other purpose is illegal.'
Thought it was doublly interesting, the story itself and the (editorial?) comment.
Have you heard about anything along these lines?
That is kinda strange, I knew I was to into this site when I had a dream last nite about a great advertising idea to stamp advertising on bills. Guess i will stay away from that route. Wouldnt be hard to sue something like this site though if does not tell users to stamp thier bills and does not make any monetary gains from stamping.
Yeah..I would think that would be the catch. "To use advertising on money for monetary gain" or something like that.
might get a little out of control if everyone started doing it though
No, I haven't heard anything about that, but I can enlighten you as to what they are talking about (I think). The guy who owns Cowboys (and several other bars) as well as the owner of a big bar called "Metro" started (perhaps as long as 2 years ago) putting stickers on top of loonies and toonies. These stickers are fairly primitive, and have the name and address of the bar on them. Neat idea, but clearly nothing like we have here. There is no commercial purpose to this site, so I would say that IMHO we are okay.
But I agree that if everyone starts writing on their money, I think it might cause some problems. However, as we all seem to agree, we are marking our money for fun, not for any monetary or commercial purpose.

Thats what i was thinking last night. We dont create profit from our stamps, Nor does the site really encourage it. They may ask us to stop some day, if it get truly out of hand, but this site is fairly small, and probably wont happen soon. But than again, more users are joining.
I haven't mentioned the site to anyone in Edmonton since I joined 2 months ago. Most of my money is circulated at a single large site (University Hospital). I was curious to see if random curiosity would strike someone. So, no hits yet. I may start to talk about the site. mmMBeer, stats junky that you are, how many bills are currently in circulation, total, in Canada? We've entered what fraction of that total?
We've entered what fraction of that total
We've talked about that before to a certain extent. Those messages must have been archived.
Sarge worked for Securicor, so we tried to estimate how many bills were in a city like Saskatoon. I believe that the number we came up with was in the range of 2-3 million bills. You can extrapolate from there of course.
Well theres about 10 million bills per series out there. (ex: 10 mil of HNA) And about 5 series per bill in circulation at one time. So say 50 million 5ers, 10s , 20s. Now Probably less 50s, ill say 25 million. 10 million 100s so around 185 million bills in circulation at one time.
This would make us at 0.00016216% of the bills in canada we've, together, entered. Thus we've entered, i dont know if i did the math ok, but i tried anyway, about 1/46250000 of the bills on canada. Ths is probably wrong. But oh well.
Quite the odds. I wonder how many regionalized to Edmonton. Lots of new wealth in Calgary; lots of old (relatively) and hidden wealth in Edmonton. I wish I had it, hidden or otherwise.
