$5.00 coin

I remember a while ago that a $5.00 coin was supposed to be brought in. Someone at work told me this was supposed to happen this past June. Anyone else hear if the new 5's are still in the works?

Marketing surveys revealed that the Cdn public wouldn't accept it easily. They'll try again as inflation slowly wears away at the $5 note

If I recall correctly, the topic is a favourite one on Apriil Fools Day that pops up and snags a few people unknowingly. I highly doubt there will be a $5 coin anytime soon. The RCM has cut production of $1 and $2 coins in the past, often not even minting any for circulation.

Besides if the $5 bill was retired that would leave us only 4 denominations to mark, 2 of which are seldom accepted or circulate in the same manner as the lower denominations. This would severely curtail and threaten sites such as this one from operating.

I don't think they (RCM (Royal Cdn Mint ) ) think about sites like these, otherwise they may create and print their own website on it, ( or one of ours (very doubtful))
but after the loonie came out they printed 2 dollar bills again, cause they had stopped, then they came out with the toonie, cause the 2 dollar bill was used more than the loonie.
I think even the RCM would admit a $5.00 COIN would be too much change for peoples pockets. There is too much deviation in pricing, . . 1 thing i have heard though is given banks go along with this, the RCM was planning on not making the penny anymore, a penny costs about 4.5 cents to make, thus in a way making it a nickel.
If they did stop making the penny they may consider making a $5.00 coin, coins last forever compaired to paper money.
40 (average) years and up, compaired to average of 3 years,
in the recent past, and in circulation I have had pennies over 60 years old
quarters you don't see older than 68 cause in 67 they were still made with silver
nickels and dimes i have seen as old as 1950.. and few and far between older than that too

Sorry for writing a report in forums.. but in university i did a report on this, currency.. etc.. laws.. was over 10 pages long.
part of my report was saying at the end makes ya wonder where you money has gone.
now that i am a memeber, makes me think i wonder if the wheres george creator read my report.
i think this internet tracking is cool!! as i think many of all you do too!!

May the penny never disappear!!! Can you imagine everything going up a nickel at a time? especially gas.

eagle_fs

ya, and my penny jar wouldn't get any fuller :(
right now I must have about 80 dollars worth in there!!!

eagle_fs

:) gotta wait till the texas mickey is full!!! Then I'm going to use the money to buy something un-important.

Lord_Comedy

actually for the exact reason eagle having 80 dollars in pennies is the reason the RCM would consider stop making pennies.
i said a penny is in a sense actually a nickel, canada looses 3.5 cents on every penny put in circulation
as for gas and merchandise it would remain the same, just the change you would end up getting at the end would be rounded to a nickel

eagle_fs

you guys almost have me convinced to spend my pennies. Well…..cash them in for 5's at the bank anyways - I could always mark the fives! :)

I throw my loose change into a bag for the year. At Xmas the younger children are allowed to reach and grab two handfuls.

Lord_Comedy

sure it isn't supposed to be hands full, but as it was written i beleive handfuls is right cause each hand in itself is full not 2 hands together full

well I for one do not believe that one exists. so if one does not exist, how does it happen that you have one?

;) it's a 1986 $5 Montreal olympics coin. Sucker weighs about a pound, and 6 of 'em in yore pocket will see your pants around yore ankles…

If you want, I can send you a scan of this unit. They made 5 versions, I think, each with a different sport on the back- mine's a diver.
