Website rewrite

Well, I did some investigation and went looking for estimates.

So far the cheapest estimate for a full rewrite is,

$40,000

Anybody happen to have that much sitting around doing nothing?

I don't think we need a rewrite. $40,000 actually sounds absolutely ridiculous, not sure where you got that figure from. With AI today, you could easily do a rewrite in maybe 50 hours of work, and even hiring a freelancer with AI tools would make it incredibly easy to rewrite a website like this. I feel like all we need are fixes that keep the site running and fix the current functions that are broken. This is the basic minimum to get the site back into it's former glory:

  • HTTPS upgrade. It's actually currently incredibly unsafe to use this website with an account if you're over a public network. I make sure to never sign in unless I'm over cellular data or my home network. I would recommend everyone else do the same.
  • Hit maps. All we need is some new API keys and some money into the account. Not sure about pricing but it shouldn't be that bad to use the Google Maps API, and I'm sure DR already has some legacy code that just needs some updating, could easily be chucked into AI to be fixed.
  • Hit notifications. Sending emails should be quite and cheap easy with today's tools
  • Postal codes. We need a new updated list with a bunch of new postal codes. Shouldn't be too much, I would personally be fine with footing this bill, if I were able to play around with that data.
  • Landing page upgrade. All we need is to add a new rescaling rule to the HTML or CSS, and people on phones will easily hit us more. I would personally design the homepage of this website to be a blaring big box that just gets people to immediately enter their bill that they've found. Unfortunately, for many people it is hard for them to figure out how to hit bills on a phone as this website was designed way before mobile browsing became the norm. This also goes hand in hand with the HTTPS upgrade, as most browsers give a blaring message that people should NOT be using this site.

That's my 2 cents, as a software developer.

Thanks!

Actually got the estimate from a local firm. zu.com

I will write up a proposal and submit it to a few more people and see what happens.

Axciously awaiting the outcome.
Update first, then upgrade is my thought.
Appreciate you both looking into this. 👍
