Marriage vs Civil Union

I heard a very interesting question a few days ago and thought that I would open a can of worms here to get some opinions.

If the Supreme Court decides that 'Same Sex' unions can be legally called 'Marriage', and therefore ignores 5,000 years of marriage being defined as 'the union of a man and a woman', would the practice of polygamy also be considered?

Would they not have an arguement under the Charter that they were being discriminated against as well?

To better understand the definition of polygamy as opposed to "polygyny", "polyandry", "bigamy", "polyfidelity", or "polyamory", try this website:

If someone wants to start it off, I'll jump in later…

well pooga all I have to say is what can we do??? 5,000 years ago there was no such thing as divorce. But it does talk about multiple wives in the bible. The native Canadian outnumbered the multiple of races in Canada many years ago but no longer. Now they out number us. The white population in the US out numbered the black man but no more and my point being: The homosexuals I do believe are beginning to outnumber the hetersexual population. "OH SO MANY DOORS AND CLOSETS HAVE BEEN OPENED"

I could use another wife around here. I cant keep up and I am not even a Mormon or whatever that religion is that polygamy is condoned. sure why not? and I would not want another husband. that is the main reason I cannot keep up with anything. man that guy can dirty dishes! I did them once every 3 days living alone and now its 3 sinkfuls a day. so yeah another wife would come in handy. but no more kids.

I have not check out the polygamy website yet, but my opinion and it's the way I always live my life. if it does not hurt anyone else and makes you happy then by all means do it. If the supreme court does word the union as marriage then of course there will be a lot of people who will twist the definition so that it meets there own needs. I think that’s why lawyers where created.

In my opinion I think the definition of marriage being 5,000 yrs old is wrong. the one that the minority of the people get all excited about is probably a couple of hundred yrs old, and if you start quoting the bible for support I’m of the opinion that it's open to a lot of interpretation and was written by people who would have naturally inserted there on views or political desires.

how’s that for starting a conversation

I agree with the idea that if same-sex unions are going to be legally considered 'marriage', pretty soon other marginalized groups are going to want the right to have their unions called marriage. And, I am not just talking about polygamists, but I'll leave it at that.

okay meangene you got me curious. you are not talking about people marrying their cars or pets are you?

meangene79

Well, I don't know too many people intent on marrying their dog or a 2 ton piece of metal and plastic, LOL, but I see your point. I guess what I mean to say is that it opens the possibility of certain groups our society would consider "odd", like same-sex couples once were and still are to some extent as well as polygamists, to want to extend marriage beyond the current boundaries. What groups those are is anyone's guess.

Funny that this topic should be mentioned though, because there is a documented case in LA in the mid-1970s of a secretary "marrying" a rock. I don't know how true it is, since I found it on one of those websites with odd facts.

Another marginalized group that would want the right to marriage…incestuous couples, both homosexual and hetrosexual.

yup! mother son
father daughter
sister brother
brother brother
grandmother grandson
yuck!

incestuous couples

Now you're getting into a new topic, genetic boundaries. I can see in the not-too-distant future where genetics will determine who can marry, and go a long way to preventing birthdefects, stillbirths, etc.

For example, total strangers may have to be told, 'no offspring', as their genetics markers indicate a high probabilty of a serious birth defect; while first cousins may be allowed because their progeny would be quite healthy.

And back to polygamy… :-)

When I worked in Egypt I met a man who had two wives. He found it complicated his life too much. The fundamentalist mormons in the US and Canada are active polygamists. The social issue there is that because of the large numbers of children in those families, social assistance is often required. I have a problem with that as a taxpayer. As far as homosexuals and 'marriage' I don't care. There are larger concerns for me in our society such as political mischief.

Well Pooga, when I got married I had to take a "class" I "dated" the same guy for 11 years, (We decided we wanted to have children),yet this wasn't good enough, during these classes, we were taught that marriage was about procreating, and really, when you think about it why get married if your not going to have children?? Maybe I'm old fashioned, but isn't that what marriage is about? Family? I know, if your older it maybe for companion, but you already had a family, (spouse passed away, etc.) I just don't think this is right.(Same sex marriage, what is the purpose?) But, that's my opinion!
