Important Question!

My daughter was online this morning when she heard someone upstairs trashing our house. (The computer is downstairs and the phone is upstairs.) She couldn't call for help until the guy went out the back door.
My question is: is there a way she could have called 911 on the computer?

J-Lynn

Sorry never heard of that, myself.. however, if you have MSN, or any other messenger, she could have relayed the message that way for someone else to call ?

hope she and everyone/thing is ok

Lord_Comedy

As J-Lynn said Only thing I can think of is by chatting online.
As long as she is chatting with someone local.
Actually I am sure even if there isn't anyone local. As long as someone she trusts … they could phone & give the information needed.

Thanks J-Lynn and Lord_Comedy…I didn't think of chat; only thing whoever she might have gotten to at 10 in the morning would have probably been someone out of province, country, or continent. Her friends in town would have been at work or school.

He took the playstation2 w/controller and memory card, a few games for it, the dvd player, LOTR 2 and 3(both special edition), Back to the Future trilogy, both Riddick movies, Magnificent Seven, an unopened triple-feature w/Metropolis,Nosferatu and ? from the same era that we just got (must have taken this one only 'cause it was wrapped - didn't take any other old B&W dvd's), Legacy series Dracula, and a few that aren't coming to me at this time. Took my daughter's messenger bag, her backpack, and one of our travel totes to take things away. Also her Learner's license and birth certificate, 2 pieces of my old ID (when I had my ex-hubby's name), and my hubby's Timex Indiglo watch.
Also 5 American $1 bills from my lingerie drawer. (He missed another US$9 and CDN$110.) Took a 1 kg jar of change and an icing tub of change, but left behind some expired credit cards. (yeah, yeah, I know, they should have been destroyed anyway…they are now) He missed more than twice as much more change, though (that was barely out of sight), and didn't seem to want the jars of pennies, LOL.

Addition to above: Hubby was just petting Bear (a rottweiler, who had just watched the thief leave out the back door from the bottom of the stairs, not chasing him or barking or trying for a break for freedom…he loves being outside) and found a sore area under his chin that the dog won't let him examine.

He suspects the guy must have had a knife or something and that is why the dog stayed downstairs. Either that, or he stayed downstairs to protect my daughter (he did try to attack a guy that popped out of nowhere behind my daughter when she was coming home down the alley one night and the dog and I were going to meet her).

Bear even cowered beneath the stairs when he heard the footsteps upstairs of hubby and daughter coming home tonight. I had to pull him from there by his collar (he weighs about 140 lbs) and push him to the stairs, where he balked until he saw my daughter. Only then did he go upstairs.

Sweetie

Sorry to hear about your burglary mesmerize-the feeling of being vandalized is truly one not a nice one!..hope they catch the culprit soon!!

dendrochick

Wow that is so scary! I hope your daughter is okay, I would have been a quivering mess after something like that. Maybe the trick to protect important things in the future is to hide them in a giant jar of pennies?

antics

good thing your daughter was not hurt. great watch dog you have there. LOL maybe you should get a maltese. Mine all attack strangers that come into the house. nipping at their ankles etc. they think that they are tough and indestructible. or 10 feet tall and bullet proof is another way to put it. the little dummies. I have one that viciously attacks the vacuum. He started that up after he saw me removing drywall dust from my clothes and and soon as I started on my hair, that was it. Kill that sucking machine that is taking away the food person. LOL. anyhow I hope you have some insurance. bad part about that is that your rates will go up really high now for awhile.

VirgoDragon

so sorry to hear about that mess good thiing it wasent any worse….best of luck hey how did hey get in best fix that pronto and look for any other security leeks all the best.

Also, either get a phone, a cell phone, or a 9mm for downstairs! - Sarge

Yeah, ordinance! that's the way to go……

Having had our home and our vehicle broken into on separate occasions I can appreciate how you guys felt. I hope everything gets back to normal for you quickly…..

Lord_Comedy

In all reality, unless they made out with more than $1000 worth of stuff it probably isn't worth going though home insurance, if you have it.
When I was looking after my mom's house when they went on holidays a couple years ago. Even though no one other than me went though the house not touching anything, the police still wouldn't dust for finger prints.
I am sure if someone was murdered they would have dusted the whole house & everything in it.
Well maybe not in Regina. But many other cities are more on the ball.
I sometimes wonder if the Regina Police wanna catch the bad guys.

Other than an alarm, which unfortunately would have been off if your daughter was home. The best security system is Solid doors with 12 inch screws on the hinges. with double deadbolts.. This way the theives need to go out the way they came in.
Along with the double deadbolts & doors. Have bars installed on you basement windows.
Many people with double deadbolt doors leave keys on the inside. This is a horrible idea. DO NOT do that. If you do, Then the robber has a key to your house. Do you want that?
Keep the doors locked when you are in the basement, or a child/ woman at home alone.
:) I forget to lock my door when I go to bed at night .. alot, I've never had any trouble.
Someone else mentioned getting a phone installed in the basement. I agree. even if you don't have a jack, you can go to X S Cargo. they have cordless phones, where you have the main one into a jack upstairs. then in the basement you have a satelite phone, where the main phone upstairs takes the call info, but the basement one has a charger to keep the phone downstairs.

Good luck on your home security.

CalamityJanet

Sorry to hear about the breakin. On the subject of double sided deadbolts, we have them and we keep a key in them, except when we go on hoidays. Why? because in the middle of the night if there is a fire, are you going to scramble around in the dark looking for a key to get out of your house? I think not. I would rather have to rekey all 3 knobs and two deadboltst to my house than have an accident like that. But at the same time, if I were on vacation, someone broke in and a fire started, if they couldn't get out because of the double sided deadbolt, guess who would be responsible for the bad guy dying in my home as it burnt down? That's right. How dumb is that?

  1. Own nothing. No target- no interest.
  2. If you must own something- get a safe. I have two, and they are both crammed with worthless stuff.
  3. Baseball bat. Quiet, clean, easy to operate…

Seriously- hope you are feeling better soon. It's the violation that seems to hurt the worst. You can get more stuff.

BANKCOLLECTOR

sorry to hear about the break in … now i would recommend two items but the one is a mute point as it seems you already have one.
1.) a phone downstairs

2.) a rotti ???? now as you already have one then i suggest guard dog classes.

i have two rotti's and will be taking one of them (jd) to classes very soon. he is 180 pounds of raw brut strength but must now learn when and how to use it.

nothing beats the old alarm sticker on the windows and doors.

Sarge

And remember, if you go the 9mm route, nobody says you are required to call the police after you use it. If, half an hour after using it the police don't show up because someone else called, then, disposal of the perp has to be done with care and a sense of finality.

Once you've been the victim a couple times , you'll understand why I advocate this solution.

Lord_Comedy

With the phone in the basement. Gotta remember. when you call 911 .. tell them you think they have a gun.. otherwise the police won't show up for an hour after they are gone.. You mention gun they will be there in 2 minutes or less.

My gosh i am so sorry mesmerize for what you and your family have been through. I am sure your daugter would have been very tramatized. I suppose in the long run you have taken an enormous loss but at least there was no life taken..there will be grieving going on for all of your family so stay supportive for each other. Again i am so sorry for your home invasion and your private life.

mesmerize

Thank you everybody for your concern and suggestions.

None of us got much sleep the first night; I think I got the most with 3 hours. Last night we all slept better.

After checking Bear over, we found his eyes are quite irritated; perhaps someone sprayed him?

My hubby agrees with most of your more forceful suggestions; says if we were living in Alberta some would be legal alternatives.

Hubby got daughter a cell phone. Bear is acting more normal. Hubby wants to move, either out of the neighbourhood or to Red Deer (if a job offer comes through). According to some of the customers at work, I seem better. (We have some great customers!)

I am running win98 and I have a modem installed in my computer. A communication program called Phone Dialer under Accessories>Communication> is an optional windows component that can be added anytime. It would work fine to dial 911. There are shareware dialer programs available all over and modem are very cheap. In any case it would be simple to dial 911 with a computer with a modem. If you want more info private msg me.

teepeejay

HP win xp has a built in phone pad so you can use your pc just like a phone. No external modem required.

Lord_Comedy

the dialer you guys are talking about has existed since computers.. Your regular phone modum, is how it is used.
If you use highspeed internet you have no phone line. As Mesmerize said she had no phone downstairs, so I assume she is on High speed. Regular modums usually have a phone out jack .. that way you can hook a phone up right to your computer. even if your computer is off this phone will work.

Kordi

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, mesmerize. That must have been very scary for your daughter. Seems like the burglar didn't realize that anybody was in the house. Only good thing that nothing happened to your daughter. Good to hear that you and your family can sleep a bit better again. I can't blame your husband to want to move after that. Just to know somebody was in the house and went through your private stuff. That must be awful. All the best to you :)

re: daughter in basement … Most crooks run if they are detected. However safety is an issue so while she was in the basement and they were up stairs some self defence would have been good to gather, had they come downstairs. A few ideas … yes a baseball bat is one but here are a few that might help spray cans of hairspray or household cleaners in your hand to spray in their eyes to allow you to escape. A hand full of laundry soap also works in the eyes. If you have a fire est. they are great after getting that sprayed in the face the crook may be down for enough time to run. She was lucky they kept upstairs in their search and did not have to defend herself but good to know a few household items can really help. Also a cup of bleach in the face also slows them down … liquid drano is very effective and may render the crook to require hospital treatment which is easy for police to follow. Just some none 9mm ideas. Buy an alarm or at least the stickers.
