The Campbell's can, matchbook, and VHF channels did me in…. ;o(

Thanks rudyk for your fine analysis of the coriolis effect. Other factors that could influence the direction of the spin could also include the shape of the basin and whether or not it is 100% level (as well as numerous others) could they not???

rudyk

10. Clockwise (north of the equator)

i'll beat pooga to this one. :) if anyone THINKS they got #10 wrong (or RIGHT, for that matter…) think again. water drains in a sink or a toilet depending on the initial motion. coriolis (that at which the question hints) does not act on small scale (spatial or temporal) circulation. try it yourself – fill a sink with water… give it a clockwise stir and pull the plug – watch it drain CW. fill it again, give it a CCW stir and when the plug is pulled it will drain that way. unstirred, it will depend on the shape of the basin or simply be random.

give yourself another point, gouche!

Pooga

rudyk prematurely presumed: i'll beat pooga to this one.

I guess not! See next thread.

Couldn't remember Bashful for the life of me! Campbell's soup can - got 5 of the 6 colours correct - shouldn't that count for something? Screwed up on the number of states but, like dendrochick said, I'm CANADIAN. Let's see how many Americans know how many provinces/territories we have!

Thanks, antics, that was fun!

Lord_Comedy

Counting Hawii & Alaska isn't it 52 states… but 50 continential states??
or alaska still being on the continential.. all though unattached can be argued to be continential.
counting Washinton DC as a state!!
I know it isn't exactly a state.. but it isn't part of any other state.

BANKCOLLECTOR

thanks lc after your comment i looked at the test again and it did not ask in continential usa just usa so that puts me at 20 correct and hmmm will drop some others down a notch … i guess to say the least the test is flawed but it was a fun little test all the same.

gouche92

There are in FACT only 50 states. Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, Marshall Islands, Palau, US Virgin Islands, Northern Marianas and the Federated States of Micronesia are considered territories or possessions of the US. Washington DC is district and not a state.

Scroll down to see the list. I am not sure why it did this….

:) with my answer having been 52 I did mark that answer wrong. another one I got wrong was the one of the 7 dwarves.
Pack of matches… well I don't smoke & don't need matches.
Cambells soup I got 5 of 6 I didn't know Gold.
& the hand of the torch of the statue of liberty.

as dendro chick pointed out it depends on the blind.
I got the water right.. but as people pointed out it can go both ways.
the # of lug nuts on an average car ir 4 or 5 depending on size.. most smaller cars have 4 lug nuts.
a better question is how many lug nuts on semi trailor tires? I am 90% sure my moving van back tires have 8.

the test was actually easy to not get the right answers for many questions.

Pooga

phone book

I think a printing error fooled you. New Jersey mistakenly has two headers, so just count it once. It's not two seperate states.

Kordi

Hmmm ..I only got 13 right. That sounds low after all of you. Anyways, thanks Antics. It was fun!

Lord_Comedy

well Kordi with 13 right you are still 85% smarter than the average american on an american based test.

Sarge

I blew:
4-missed the blue on the Campbells can;
11-had the slash of the no smoking sign the wrong direction…but I don't smoke, so I don't look at the signs;
25-wrong direction on the merry go round.

I consider any answer correct for the coriolis effect-I said any direction.

I think I should get bonus points for Q23. It asked for the symbols on the phone. I didn't go * and #, I correctly said 'asterick' and 'octothorpe'.

rudyk

sarge crowed:
I think I should get bonus points for Q23. It asked for the symbols on the phone. I didn't go * and #, I correctly said 'asterick' and 'octothorpe'.

now… if only you'd have said asterisk and octothorpe.. :)

mstiggs

51 DC is now and for a few yes has been considered a State. Fortunately I have relatives who live there.

gouche92

I didn't go * and #, I correctly said 'asterick' and 'octothorpe'. - Sarge

Oooo! Mister Smartie pants!! :o)

You could also read into the question that they wanted the symbol itself and not the name…. ;o) So BONUS points for anyone who got it right….. YEAH!!!!

Pooga

DC is now and for a few yes has been considered a State

Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's not a state. That's why it's called the "District of Columbia". As an example, they don't have their own Senators or Representatives.

I would direct you to this page from the DC website.

gouche92

Yes they have in fact "considered" DC to be a state for a number of years. Being "considered" a state and "being" a state are not the same thing. They may consider themselves a state but they are still only the Government District of Columbia….

antics

it's called the "District of Columbia". I knew that from a few months ago when I had to mail a parcel there. Until that enlightening moment in the post office I just wondered what the????? I did not want to email the person and ask and risk looking duh for yet another time so I asked the postal person who made a phone call and then were were actually BOTH enlightened.
