I can certainly do a lookup to see how many registered users have read a message as that data is already available in the database. I don't want to keep track of the number of views (ie. would include anonymous users reading the message as well as registered users re-reading) as that would require an update to the DB each time the message is viewed, which ultimately would simply slow down the application.
